Government Job Resume Format — SSC, UPSC, Banking & PSU (2026)
A resume built for a private-sector recruiter often gets rejected by government screening — not because of your qualifications, but because of formatting. Here is the layout, fields, and structure that actually clear SSC, UPSC, state PSC, railway, and PSU applications.
Why a private-sector resume format fails here
Most resume templates you find online are designed for IT and corporate hiring — two-column layouts, icon-based skill bars, colored sidebars. Government recruitment works differently. Many SSC, UPSC, and PSU application portals still print or manually verify submissions, and several ask for information a corporate resume never includes: category (General/OBC/SC/ST/EWS), father's or husband's name, date of birth in a specific format, and sometimes your exam roll number or registration ID.
A resume missing these fields, or one that buries them inside a decorative sidebar a scanning clerk has to hunt for, creates friction at the exact stage where you have the least room for error — initial document verification.
The structure that works
Government resumes are read top to bottom, in order, by someone comparing your claims against a checklist. That means a strict single-column, reverse-chronological layout with clearly labelled sections beats anything visually creative:
- Personal details first — full name, DOB, category, father's/husband's name, contact info
- Educational qualification as a table: degree, board/university, year, percentage or CGPA
- Work experience (if any), most recent first, with department and duration
- Skills and certifications relevant to the post
- Declaration line — many government forms expect a signed declaration of accuracy
Formatting rules that matter more here than elsewhere
Keep it to one page unless you have 8+ years of relevant experience — two-page resumes for entry-level and mid-level government posts read as padded. Use a formal serif or clean sans font, avoid photos unless the specific form requests one (some banking and PSU applications do), and export as a plain PDF under 2MB with no password protection, since several portals reject encrypted or oversized files outright.
Percentages matter more in government hiring than in private-sector resumes — always show your exact marks or CGPA next to each qualification rather than just "graduated," since several recruitment boards use marks as a shortlisting cutoff before they even read the rest of the resume.
